Awards recipients are selected every spring by the CU-Boulder Outreach Committee for individual faculty members, and interdisciplinary or inter-departmental groups within the CU-Boulder campus. Awards are made to standalone projects, as well as extensions of larger projects.

The Office for University Outreach provides administrative support and oversight for the CU-Boulder Outreach Committee. CU-Boulder Outreach Awards are made possible through contributions made by the Division of Continuing Education along with funds from the Office of the Chancellor and the Office of the Provost.
